Abstract
SHADOWS OF DEATH: A MOTHER'S MEMOIR is a nonfiction account of early parenting years that are marked by the loss of a baby to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The story begins with the surprise pregnancy of the first child, a girl, and then segues into the addition of a baby boy who dies of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome at two months of age. The memoir, which is told from the mother's point of view, details the family's move to a new town and the disappointment experienced there as they face unrealized expectations of the place. The bereaved mother bears another son, and encounters her fears of death and her feelings of guilt. The memoir ends with the five-year-old daughter's questions about mortality, and with hope.
