This study examined the relationship between personality, sex, and binge drinking. Does sex and one's personality affect how frequently and severely one binge drinks? The results of the current study found mixed results. One hundred fourteen undergraduate students (39 males, 75 females) completed questionnaires concerning alcohol use, personality, and gender identity. These questionnaires were designed to measure how frequently and severely one binge drinks and to understand how one's personality based on the Five Factor Model of Personality correlates to binge drinking. The study did not find significant differences concerning binge frequency between the sexes. There were significant differences between males and females concerning how severely one binge drinks. Extraversion was significantly correlated with binge frequency/severity while Conscientiousness was not. Finally, the interactions between Neuroticism and Sex, and Agreeableness and Sex were found to be non-significant predictors of binge drinking. The results of the current study should be explored in future studies to understand more clearly the relationships that exist between personality, sex, and binge drinking.
