Abstract

The research presented is the progress made toward a 1,4-topochemical polymerization of a butadiene. The goal of my research is to better understand the design and preparation of supramolecular structures through a host-guest/co-crystal strategy. This strategy requires the synthesis of host compounds with dicarboxylic acid and dipyridine functionality that will co-crystallize with diene guest compounds through hydrogen bonding. The host compounds must organize the diene guests with the correct parameters for topochemical polymerization. The ultimate goal of most solid state polymerization reactions is to achieve polymers with high molecular weight and stereoregularity. The following paper presents compounds with the structural parameters necessary for a topochemical polymerization reaction, as well as the progress made into the synthesis and co-crystallization of these compounds.
