Abstract
Fault Lines is a short story collection that follows the lives of two young lovers, Saul Glaston and Lyca Ellis, who are searching for identity and place. The five stories set in Georgia, Idaho, North Carolina, South Carolina, Wyoming, and Zimbabwe address their quest, both alone and apart, for identity within the landscapes they inhabit. The first story, ""Lights Out,"" details the events that lead Saul to forsake home and search for his own place in the world. The following story, ""Secure,"" skips ahead to the pivotal moment in Saul 's life, a fall from a cliff face on the Chattooga river. Both this story and the next, ""Fault Lines,"" emphasize the growing separation both physically and spiritually, between the young couple. The fourth story, ""Anchor Ice,"" recounts Lyca's reaction to the separation. Likewise, in the final story, ""Leaving the Music,"" Saul travels to Zimbabwe in order to recover from the separation. The outcomes of their journeys, though very different, illustrate how they each find peace within themselves and within the world around them.
