Abstract
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) frequently assess and treat clients from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds. Projections indicate that if current population trends continue, individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds will become the majority in the United States by around the year 2060 (US Census Bureau. 2000). Adams, Hendershot & Marano (1999) noted that the incidence of speech and hearing disorders is higher among ethnic and racial minority groups. It has been postulated that this might be due to the fact that there is a critical shortage in the profession of individuals trained to work with CLD clientele (Walters & Geller, 2002). The literature offers many suggestions on how SLPs should assess and treat clients from CLD backgrounds, and yet, most certified professionals still do not believe that they possess the knowledge and skill base to work with this population (Coleman, 2000). Despite all that has been written regarding what ought to be best practice for SLPs when serving CLD populations, there is no information pertaining to what practices are currently being used and are regarded as successful. The purpose of the proposed study is to synthesize information regarding what practices are reported to be successful when treating culturally and linguistically diverse clients in the field of Speech-Language Pathology.
