Abstract

Reactions are typically performed in solution. There are however reactions which are known to occur in the solid state. The focus of this research is to better understand the molecular interactions found in crystals by forming multi-component crystals using functionally similar components with structural variations. The goal was to observe the changes in crystal structure with relation to the profress of the solid state reaction occurring. For this project, the successful 1,4-topochemical polymerization of multiple butadiene derivatives was the goal. Butadiene, one or the compounds used in the rubber that tires are manufactured from is one molecule which has been observed to undergo topochemical reactions.
