Abstract
Hot Springs, a creative thesis in the form of a novel, is set in Western North Carolina during WWI. The major themes revolve around emotional and spiritual redemption and the conflict produced in human sexuality. The protagonists, Jans MacPherson and Bonnie O' Dell, both face emotional and spiritual stagnation due to the war deaths of their respective spouses. Jans, P.0.W being held in Hot Springs for the war, finds himself progressively attracted to Bonnie, a local woman whose Victorian family is a holdover from the roaring 1890's. Jans is simultaneously drawn toward Bonnie and repulsed by the idea of risking attachment to another woman after the brutal death of his wife in Germany Likewise, Bonnie, whose husband died years before in the Spanish American War, finds herself drawn to Jans, but afraid to risk her emotions in a situation that seems doomed from the start, a liaison between a German prisoner and an American Woman. Both are connected by their love for horses, but both also realize that the age of the horse is ending. The world is changing. Will they change as well or simply cease hoping for the future. The question is whether they can overcome years of hopelessness and find redemption while resisting the sexual urges that draw them toward each other. Can they treat each other as humans rather than exploit each other as animals? The thesis, an incomplete novel, ends at the point just before the greatest conflict of the story.
