Abstract

In its entirety, Damaged Goods explores a period of history, 1998 until 2001, during which time I remained enlisted overseas in the United States Air Force. Choosing to show rather than tell and inspired by the Irish Playwright Samuel Beckett, the memoir presents the enlistment experiences in a play-like manner, focusing on dialogue-driven action. Subtly, but almost immediately, the memoir dives into a problematic area of the modern military experience; the integration of women into the armed forces and the pervasive presence of military sexual trauma. While my enlistment actually ran from 1997 until 2005, I chose to focus on the period of time that emerged before the War on Terror and the Iraq War began in a new, more elevated way. In point, the focus of the memoir remained that of the problem of military sexual trauma. Issues related to wars, conflicts, or bombing campaigns were either briefly mentioned or left out entirely. The assumption is that history will have dozens of war-related memoirs, but I wanted to narrow the focus to a close examination of a disturbing cultural aspect of military life. Completed predominately during one summer in the south of France, seated in cafes, on park benches, or locked away in a dormitory room, Damaged Goods accumulates a series of meditations that aim to express the most accurate dialogue and action as possible. The text has been repeatedly screened for truth and removal of bias. Generally speaking, I wanted to present the reality as it happened and let the reader formulate political or personal opinions regarding the situations presented in the memoir.
