Abstract

This thesis concerns the link between the memory of Confederate defeat and the rise of white supremacy movements in North Carolina during Reconstruction. The images of Confederate defeat, termed "the Lost Cause" by scholars, has been examined through the use of many methodological concepts such as mythology, civil religion, and as simply as a rhetorical rationalization of defeat. This study is an examination of the Lost Cause using social memory as an interpretative framework. No attempt has been made to write a comprehensive history of North Carolina during reconstruction. Instead, this work focuses on a single, long-neglected aspect of the Reconstruction experience in the state. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the years between 1865 and 1870, the period when this social memory had the most profound influence. Reconstruction historiography has been extensively examined, but is not analyzed or compared in detail. A essay on the various interpretation of social memory has been included, as some readers may be unfamiliar with the concept and its methodological applications.
