Description

Amy’s story “Water Buckets and Dippers” begins the show with her memories of how her family got water from a spring. “Appalachian Sunrise” accompanies the story. On Creative Corner, Doreyl welcomes back Jessie Swigger, a history professor at Western Carolina University and the president of the Appalachian Women’s Museum. This week she talks about the Monteith House in Dillsboro and the plans the organization has to preserve the house and open it to the public as a museum. “Grandma Did It All” by Ginny McAfee follows the interview. Amy talks again with Blanche Potts Wike on Stories of Mountain Folk. This week Blanche talks about growing up in Jackson County, focusing on East Laport and Cullowhee. The interview is followed by “Big Mon” by the Rye Holler Boys. On Black Roots of Appalachia, Victoria talks with Delmica Baerga, a native of Brooklyn. She has lived in western North Carolina for 8 years, and compares the cultural differences between the North and the South. “Old Dirt Road” by Andrews & Lawrence follows the interview. On Down Another Road, an interview from June 2, 2012, with potter Charlie Brown of Arden, is rebroadcast. He is a master potter and shares his long family history of turning pottery. The interview is followed by “The Small Birds Rejoice” by James Malcolm, and the show closes with “Little Black Mustache” by the late Mary Jane Queen.
