Dedication of the Confederate Monument in Sylva in 1915
Subject

Description
On September 18, 1915, a crowd estimated at 3,000 people arrived in Sylva, N.C., to attend the dedication of the Civil War monument. The monument had been located prominently on the steps leading up from the town's main street to the new Jackson County Courthouse, which had been completed in February 1914. The size of the gathering was made possible in part due to the railway passenger service that Sylva enjoyed as a stop along the Murphy Branch of the Southern Railway. As seen in this photograph, veterans of the Civil War pose with the monument for the dedication ceremonies. The handwritten caption on the reverse incorrectly states that the picture was made in 1912.
