This image from a multiple-view postcard advertising the Balsam Inn's 1909 season depicted the Balsam, N.C., railroad depot along the Murphy Branch of the Southern Railway, located near the border between Jackson County and Haywood County, North Carolina. As part of its advertisement, the Balsam Inn noted that the rail line near the depot 'has the distinction of being the highest railroad point east of the Rockies, with an elevation of 3551 feet above sea level.'
