Description

This advertisement for the Turnpike Hotel from Thomas H. Lindsey's book 'Lindsey's Guide Book to Western North Carolina' (Asheville, N.C.: The Randolph - Kerr Printing Co., 1890), proclaimed it to be 'A Delightful Home in the Heart of the Alleghanies, Where Health comes back to the weary, and Rest to the Sweet.' The hotel was near the county line between Haywood and Buncombe counties, N.C., at the location of a toll gate for a 19th century turnpike.
