Title

Whitaker Bros., Andrews, N.C.

Subject

Andrews (N.C.)

Description

A notation in the lower left corner of this photograph identifies it as the store of the 'Whitaker Bros., Andrews, N.C.' A handwritten note on the reverse of the photograph names the two men as (left to right) Harve Whitaker and Zeb Whitaker and conjectures a date for the picture as about 1930. The photographer's name is unknown. The advertisements around the counters, as on the left of the picture, feature women with the short hairstyles that became popular in the 1920s. The United States federal census for 1930 of Cherokee County, North Carolina for Valleytown Township lists Harve M. Whitaker and gives his age as 53 with an occupation as a merchant in 'Dry Goods.' While there is a Zeb Whitaker listed in the same census, he is listed as a fireman on a log train. However, a Zed Whitaker was listed in a neighboring household of Harve Whitaker, in the home of Quincy Whitaker, with an age of 49 and who also was listed as a merchant in 'Dry Goods.'
