Description

This photograph of Bryson City, North Carolina, and the surrounding countryside by R.A. Romanes (1896-1978) was dated November 1, 1937. This view highlights the town's mountain setting. The Swain County Courthouse, built in 1908, is discernable in the picture by its cupola at center right. At the time that this photograph was taken, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park had been dedicated three years earlier and Bryson City was one of the 'gateway' towns for the new park.
