They bought land along the Pigeon River and built the earliest known frame dwelling in the area which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Shook-Welch-Smathers House. Written on the frame of the photograph is J. M. McCanless 12 N. Pack Square Asheville, N.C. James Melton McCanless (1858-1942) had various photography studios in Asheville since at least 1895 to around 1920.
