This portrait of Parthany Joyce Shook (1826-1896), also known as Parthena or Parthenia, was taken by J. D. Owen of Clyde, N.C. Parthany was married to David Parker Shook (1822-1902), grandson of Jacob Shook (1749-1839) and Isabella Weitzell Shook (1749-1834). After serving in the American Revolutionary War, Jacob Shook and his wife bought land and settled along the Pigeon River in what is now Clyde, N.C. Shook built the earliest known frame dwelling in the area which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Shook-Welch-Smathers House.
