Description

This portrait shows Mary Sue Haynes and is dated December 14, 1904. Mary Sue is the daughter of Humphrey Leon Haynes (1871-1937). Humphrey is the son of John Monteville Haynes and Nancy Adeline Smathers Haynes and grandson of Levi Smathers and Sarah Cook Smathers. Levi is the son of the first Smathers’ to come to Haywood County, Johannes and Mary Agner Smathers. He was the third and last person to add onto Jacob Shook’s house located near the Pigeon River in Clyde, N.C. Shook built the earliest known frame dwelling in the area which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Shook-Welch-Smathers House.
