Description

This biographical pamphlet titled “Chief Junaluska” was written by Hiram C. Wilburn (1880-1967) and published in 1950. The pamphlet is structured around illustrated lithographs of Cherokee history and Junaluska’s life by Douglas Grant, with a brief accompanying essay by Wilburn. Included in the pamphlet are discussions on lithographs titled the following: “Chief Junaluska,” “Discovery of the Oconaluftee River,” “The Boundary Tree,” “Ambush at Raven’s Place,” “Cherokee ambush a Shawano war party at Soco Gap,” and “The Mt. Le Conte group, whose Cherokee name is Wah-lah-see-yah, meaning frog place.” In April 1937, Park Superintendent J.R. Eakin appointed Wilburn "Acting Park Historian." During his time as acting Park Historian, he made extensive surveys and studies of the historical aspects of the Park area, particularly with regard to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
