Description

The New Testament, Translated into the Cherokee Language. Fifth edition Park Hill: Mission Press, 1850 is 764 pages and measures just over 5” x 3”. Translated by Samuel Austin Worcester (1798-1859) and Elias Boudinot (1802-1839), born Gallegina Uwati, also known as Buck Watie. In 1828, Worcester and Boudinot began working together to edit and print the “Cherokee Phoenix,” the first newspaper to be published by a Native American tribe. Worcester was a missionary and a printer who cast and created the metal type for each character in the syllabary. Boudinot, educated by missionaries, was bilingual in English and Cherokee, and was an influential leader of the Cherokee Nation.
