Description
This memoranda book was used by James W. Terrell (1829-1908) to keep track of land transactions in western North Carolina, particularly the Cheoah, Murphy, and Snowbird areas. It includes acreage for various tracts, payment information, deed acquisitions, and disputes. The earliest mentioned date is 1847 and the latest is 1876. Terrell was born in Rutherford County, NC. In 1852 Terrell took charge of William Holland Thomas' trading store in Quallatown, the business center of the North Carolina Cherokee Indian community (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians). Terrell eventually became an Indian agent (later known as superintendent), as was his employer and business partner, Thomas.
