This 1969 Swain County High School senior class photograph was taken in front of the United States Capitol building in Washington D.C. The panoramic photograph, taken by Central Photograph Company, includes their signature style, a “runner” who appears in the image twice. In this photograph, the bus driver is the runner, taking his jacket off along the way. The flag can be seen flying at half-staff. Each year from as early as 1953 until about 2015, Swain County seniors took a trip from Bryson City, North Carolina to the District of Columbia with high school teachers as their chaperones. Until 1970 the trip was made by a combination of bus and train via Southern Railway. Starting in 1971 a bus was taken the entire way. According to an article in the April 17, 1969 edition of the Smoky Mountain Times their itinerary included three full days of sightseeing and included the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the FBI, the Washington Monument, the National Archives, and much more.
