Description

This woodblock print titled “Saturday Morning” by John “Jack” Taylor (1906-1990) shows a bustling town square scene with a supermarket in the background. The print is signed John W. Taylor and incorporated into the image is “JT 47.” This is one of 26 relief prints, donated by the artist’s son Nick Taylor, depicting life in western North Carolina. John Taylor was a self-taught, avocational artist. A native of England, he emigrated to Canada, then to the United States, and moved with his wife Clare to Waynesville, NC in the early 1940s. He traveled widely around the area as the Haywood County land surveyor, which is how he encountered many of the subjects portrayed in his prints.
