Description

This photograph shows Sawyer Cemetery in Swain County, at Stevenson Branch, before seeding. This is a critical area where vegetation was planted to prevent erosion damage. Names visible on headstones include Sawyer, Douglas, and Carson. This photo is from the Tuckaseigee Soil & Water Conservation District, which was formed in western North Carolina in 1957 and became the Swain Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) in 1982. The Swain SWCD’s mission is to provide for a quality environment and higher standard of living while protecting natural resources. The Swain SWCD photographs capture various SWCD projects throughout Swain, Jackson, Graham, Haywood, and surrounding counties in western North Carolina.
