Description

A view of the flooded Tuckasegee River, looking east from Bryson City. Highway 74 and Walker Woody Road can be seen in the upper right of the image. The flooded land next to the river is the present-day site of Darnell Farms. The reverse reads “March high waters created new rivers in Swain County over acres of cropland.” This photo is from the Tuckaseigee Soil & Water Conservation District, which was formed in western North Carolina in 1957 and became the Swain Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) in 1982. The Swain SWCD’s mission is to provide for a quality environment and higher standard of living while protecting natural resources. The Swain SWCD photographs capture various SWCD projects throughout Swain, Jackson, Graham, Haywood, and surrounding counties in western North Carolina.
