Description

A herd of dairy cows grazes on hard fescue and clover at Ferguson Farm, 3 miles East of Bryson City, near present-day Darnell Farms. The area is the site of Kituwah, the Cherokees' first settlement, the Mother Town of the Cherokee, and is designated a National Historic Site. This photo is from the Tuckaseigee Soil & Water Conservation District, which was formed in western North Carolina in 1957 and became the Swain Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) in 1982. The Swain SWCD’s mission is to provide for a quality environment and higher standard of living while protecting natural resources. The Swain SWCD photographs capture various SWCD projects throughout Swain, Jackson, Graham, Haywood, and surrounding counties in western North Carolina.
