Description
James Kirkpatrick, riding the tractor, makes a third cutting of alfalfa hay from sod strips on this strip-cropped hillside in the Long Branch area of Crabtree, Haywood County. The disced strip in the immediate foreground has been limed and fertilized in preparation for seeding alfalfa. This photo is from the Tuckaseigee Soil & Water Conservation District, which was formed in western North Carolina in 1957 and became the Swain Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) in 1982. The Swain SWCD’s mission is to provide for a quality environment and higher standard of living while protecting natural resources. The Swain SWCD photographs capture various SWCD projects throughout Swain, Jackson, Graham, Haywood, and surrounding counties in western North Carolina.
