C.” and is stamped “Reference Dept. Jun 27, 1931 N.E. A.” The other photograph, not scanned has typed on the reverse, “Azalea, a most strikingly beautiful flower of the southern mountain region. This view was taken of the plant in full bloom in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At the left may be seen a specimen of the famous mountain laurel not yet fully open.” The photograph is stamped “Compliments of Publicity Bureau Asheville Chamber of Commerce Asheville, N.C.” and dated December 28, 1937. Masa’s identifying number is found on the bottom left, 0-1791. This item is from the Hart Masa Collection, a collection of photographs, publications, postcards, correspondence, and ephemera related to the life and work of photographer George Masa. Known for his iconic images of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and his advocacy for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Masa also produced commercial work for private businesses, publishers, news services, and other entities. The Hart Masa Collection was assembled by donors William A. Hart, Jr., and Alice Huff Hart, who provided much of the contextual information for the items in this collection.
