George Masa (1885-1933) took this 1921 photograph of Calvin Coolidge, who was at the time vice president of the United States. Coolidge is pictured here sitting on the front porch of the Grove Park Inn with his wife, Grace Goodhue Coolidge, and their friends Emily Williston Clark Stearns and her husband Frank Waterman Stearns. Masa’s identifying number is in the bottom left corner, 80-121. The right corner is marked Plateau Studios – 1921, which was owned by Masa at the time. The back is stamped “Reference Dept. Feb 16, 1921, N. E. A." This item is from the Hart Masa Collection, a collection of photographs, publications, postcards, correspondence, and ephemera related to the life and work of photographer George Masa. Known for his iconic images of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and his advocacy for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Masa also produced commercial work for private businesses, publishers, news services, and other entities. The Hart Masa Collection was assembled by donors William A. Hart, Jr., and Alice Huff Hart, who provided much of the contextual information for the items in this collection.
