Description

This postcard is captioned “Rhododendron on Little Pigeon River Great Smoky Mtn National Park.” Also written on the photograph is “© Cline 35” and the identifying number, 1-I-26. Walter Matson Cline, Sr. (1873-1941) taught his son Walter Matson Cline Jr. (1914-1984) the art of photography, and W. M. Cline Jr. used the business sense gained from his mother to create a family postcard business using the thousands of photographs he and his father had together taken over the years. This item is from the Hart Masa Collection, a collection of photographs, publications, postcards, correspondence, and ephemera related to the life and work of photographer George Masa (1885-1933). Known for his iconic images of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and his advocacy for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Masa also produced commercial work for private businesses, publishers, news services, and other entities. The Hart Masa Collection was assembled by donors William A. Hart, Jr., and Alice Huff Hart, who provided much of the contextual information for the items in this collection.
