Description

Brasstown Carver Nolan Beaver holds a beaver woodcarving at a class for the John C. Campbell Folk School apprenticeship program, March 1990. Nolan Beaver (1916-1998) was the first of the large Beaver family to begin carving. Inspired by W.J. Martin, Nolan was already a whittler before he began learning the Brasstown Carver style under Murray Martin in 1935. Though best known for his miniature woodcarvings, Nolan was skilled in other forms of woodwork and carving as well. Among numerous jobs, he was a cabinetmaker, carved plaster molds for tire companies, worked on airplane cabins, and made toys.
