Description
Brasstown Carver Hayden Hensley with his large collection of pocketknives used for woodcarving. Hayden Hensley of Cherokee County, NC, was among the first students at John C. Campbell Folk School in 1927. So was Bonnie Logan (1913-2001); the couple met at the school and married in 1931. Craft Director Louise Pitman credited Hayden with making the first carving, a goose, at the Folk School that same year. Hayden became known for his goose carvings, and the couple made most of their living from carving until World War Two. Hayden did the carving, and Bonnie did the finishing on the pieces. Due to this source of income, Hayden and Bonnie’s home was referred to as the “house that carving built.” While Hayden did not carve much for the Brasstown Carvers after 1941, he taught carving at Tri-County Community College for some years.
