Dexter Dockery and Hazel Dockery selling their woodcarvings at a John C. Campbell Folk School Fall Festival. Husband-and-wife Brasstown Carver duo Dexter Dockery (1931-2015) and Hazel Dockery (1931-2018) hailed from Union County, GA. Dexter was a pastor who began carving around 1939. Hazel started out by sanding Dexter's carvings, then also began carving around 1949. While Dexter learned primarily from Murray Martin and Jack Hall, Hazel learned from Dexter. Dexter was recognized by the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild as a Lifetime Member in the late 1980s.
