Description

This photograph captioned “Margo Terrace, Asheville, N.C.” was taken by George Masa (1885-1933). Masa’s business name, Plateau Studios, 1921 is found in the bottom right corner. On the reverse is written “Mother’s room at right” and “George Masa Plateau Studio.” The Margo Terrace Hotel sat at the intersection of Haywood Street and French Broad Avenue. It was built in 1890 and operated until the late 1920s, later demolished. It had 60 rooms, 45 baths and accommodated 125 guests. This item is from the Hart Masa Collection, a collection of photographs, publications, postcards, correspondence, and ephemera related to the life and work of photographer George Masa. Known for his iconic images of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and his advocacy for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Masa also produced commercial work for private businesses, publishers, news services, and other entities. The Hart Masa Collection was assembled by donors William A. Hart, Jr., and Alice Huff Hart, who provided much of the contextual information for the items in this collection.
