Description

This 1930s touristic booklet, titled “‘In the Land of the Sky’ Asheville, North Carolina” features many photographs taken by George Masa (1885-1933). Included is an insert for the Pisgah Inn and Cliff Dwellers Inn, also featuring Masa photographs. Along the bottom of the first page of the booklet, below one of Masa’s photographs of Asheville is written, “This Booklet designed and written for the Asheville Chamber of Commerce by the W. H. Davis Advertising Agency, and printed by The Biltmore Press. Scenic photographs by Elliot Lyman Fisher, Frank Clodfelter, Carlos Campbell, Wilson & Creasman, and the late George Masa.” This item is from the Hart Masa Collection, a collection of photographs, publications, postcards, correspondence, and ephemera related to the life and work of photographer George Masa. Known for his iconic images of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and his advocacy for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Masa also produced commercial work for private businesses, publishers, news services, and other entities. The Hart Masa Collection was assembled by donors William A. Hart, Jr., and Alice Huff Hart, who provided much of the contextual information for the items in this collection.
