Description

This 1930s booklet titled “Photomurals: The Asheville-Biltmore Hotel” states that the photomurals were made by Elliott Lyman Fisher (1885-1968). Fisher bought 6,000 George Masa (1885-1933) negatives after Masa’s death and some of these images are miscredited. Masa images in this book are from the crest of Elk Mountain Ridge, Mount Mitchell, Hickory Nut Gap, looking towards [Plott Balsams], and Pisgah and the Rat. The book provides information about Photomurals in general and provides a caption for each one on the wall of the dining room. This item is from the Hart Masa Collection, a collection of photographs, publications, postcards, correspondence, and ephemera related to the life and work of photographer George Masa. Known for his iconic images of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and his advocacy for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Masa also produced commercial work for private businesses, publishers, news services, and other entities. The Hart Masa Collection was assembled by donors William A. Hart, Jr., and Alice Huff Hart, who provided much of the contextual information for the items in this collection.
