Description
This photograph of Fred Otto Scroggs was taken by Doris Ulmann in 1933 or 1934. Scroggs ran the general store in Brasstown, N.C. and was instrumental in organizing the local community support for the creation of the John C. Campbell Folk School in 1925. Scroggs approached Marguerite Butler during her stay at The Regal Hotel in Murphy to validate rumors of the future Folk School's location. A well-read man, Scroggs surprised Butler with his knowledge of the Danish 'folkehojskole' and encouraged her to consider Brasstown for a location. One of the oldest names in Brasstown, the Scroggs family gave a large portion of land for the school at its inception.
