Description

This photograph of men on the porch of Fred O. Scrogg's store in Brasstown, N.C. was taken by Doris Ulmann in 1933 or 1934. The back of the photograph reads, ""Sons of Rest" at Fred O's Store. Fred O. (in doorway) - Roy Teems (left foreground) - Bill Clayton (on chair)." Scroggs and his store were significant in the creation of the John C. Campbell Folk School and the development of the woodcarving program which later became known as the Brasstown Carvers. Scroggs was instrumental in organizing community support for the school. Lore has it that Olive Dame Campbell witnesses the men idly whittling away at the bench in front of the store and had the idea to recruit them to make carvings for sale. This bench is now in the collection at the school's History Center.
