Description

This undated black and white promotional photograph shows seven different kinds of pewter buttons produced by the Penland Weavers and Potters sometime during the period 1940-1967. Handwritten on the back: "Pewter or Copper 1. Acorn .20 each; 2. - 7. Maple Leaf .25 -.50 each; 3. - 4. dogwood .20 - .25 each; 5. ivy .35 each; 6. round, also a larger plain round, .20 & .30 each." No pewter ware was produced during WWII because of the need for metal during wartime. The Penland Weavers and Potters (originally called the Fireside Industries) were established in 1923 as a department of the Appalachian School. In 1938, Penland School of Handicrafts (now Penland School of Crafts) was incorporated and the Penland Weavers and Potters became associated with the new craft school.
