The second National Conference on Handicrafts met at Penland School of Crafts, August 26 - September 4, 1940. The event was co-hosted by Penland and the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild, though most of the documentation of the conference seems to have been generated by Penland. The first conference, held in September 1936, was sponsored by the New Hampshire League of Arts and Crafts. This folder of materials contains the following documents: 1. Promotional brochure giving the history and goals of the conference and registration information (2 pages; 3 scans). 2. "Dear Friends" letter from Lucy Morgan promoting the Penland conference, 1 August, 1940 (2 pages). 3. List of registrants (6 pages). 4. Minutes of conference (33 pages). 4. Recommendations of the Committee on Resolutions (1 page). 5. Address by Sue Hurt, "Handicrafts - Source of Healing," presented on 30 August 1940 (8 pages). On September 3, 1940, Mr. Whitney Atchley, Consultant on Crafts with the Works Progress Administration, addressed those gathered at Penland for the second National Conference on Handicrafts.
