Description

This photograph was taken by an unknown photographer at the 1909 White Rock Fair and features a display of handmade craft items. On display at left and right is a fringed coverlet or rug made in a variation of a weave pattern known as Cat Tracks and Snail Trail or Snow Trail. The circles are said to resemble a cat's paw or snowball while the diagonal undulating lines resemble snail tracks or a Rattlesnake pattern. Coverlet pattern names were never standardized thus a variation in pattern name is quite common from state to state and region to region. Several flower arrangements are pictured and cornshuck hats hang on the right just below two standing dolls. A note on back of the photograph identifies the quilt as the " 'Beartrack' - quilt invented by White Rock Women, White Rock Fair." White Rock is located a few miles east of Allanstand in Madison County, North Carolina. Allanstand Cottage Industries was a craft cooperative founded in western North Carolina in the 1890s by Frances Louisa Goodrich (1856-1944).
