Warping the chain, side view
Dublin Core
Title
Warping the chain, side view
Description
The two women in the photograph are "warping the chain," a weaving term for measuring out the threads to be used as the warp on the loom. They are taking thread from the spools to the right in the photograph and winding it from peg to peg on the face of the warping board. When they have enough thread, they will create a chain by pulling the fiber through itself. The thread will than be ready for placement as the warp of a loom. The women are unidentified except for a note on the back that reads: "Three Grey women." This photograph was probably taken in the late 1890s to early 1900s in Madison County, N.C. and was used in Frances Goodrich's 1931 book, "Mountain Homespun."
