Description
This photograph shows Elmeda Walker working at her loom outside of a mountain cabin in the late 1890s or early 1900s. The coverlet design is visible as it moves on to the weaver's lap. This photograph was used in promotional materials for Allanstand Cottage Industries and was also included in Goodrich's book "Mountain Homespun," where it is captioned "Granny Jude at work." Walker lived just west of Allanstand, N.C. in Tennessee (or Elkin, N.C.) and Frances Goodrich often relied on Walker for information and help with starting Allanstand Cottage Industries. Walker was an expert production weaver and her work was used in the White House's Blue Mountain Room during Woodrow Wilson's presidency.
