Description

This photograph album belonged to Frances Goodrich and contains photographs documenting her years as a Presbyterian missionary in Madison County, N.C. during the late 1890s and early 1900s. The photographs reflect the formation of the Presbyterian mission including the building of a church, school building, and teacher housing. The creation of a post office during this time period established the community's name as Allanstand. It was during this time that Goodrich established Allanstand Cottage Industries as a cooperative designed to revive local crafts and provide some income to the local families. These snapshot photographs provide a candid view of rural mountain life in western North Carolina as they depict Goodrich riding her horse through creeks and woods, gathering with local residents, working with teachers. Many of the photographs have brief encrypted captions identifying individuals and places. Only selected images are included here.
