Description

This photograph depicts a tufted bedspread, believed to have been sold through Allanstand Cottage Industries during the 1910s. The back of the photograph is stamped "Miss W. C. Wilkie, West Asheville, N.C." along with a note in Frances Goodrich's hand reading: "Bed Spread, Original Design on handwoven canvas in dark blue with a touch of rich red & light green." The maker of this bedspread is unknown. Tufting was a domestic handcraft that was revived in the 1890s throughout the southeastern U.S. The process became mechanized and continued as the manufactured chenille bedspreads that became popular in the 1940s and 1950s.
