Description

This hand-pieced and hand-quilted quilt in the "Wheel" or "Sunburst" pattern was likely made by Rebecca Jane Pannell (1890-1925) of Jackson County, NC. Most of the print fabrics date from the late 1800's. The quilt thread is dark brown and the quilting pattern varies in each block from concentric circles to triangular rays to parallel lines. The backing is cotton fabric dyed dark brown using black walnut hulls. Home dyeing fabrics for quilts was common in rural North Carolina communities during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
