Description

This quilt, known by the pattern name as "Trip Around the World," was made by Martha Sitton Rigdon (1843-1907) of the Speedwell Community, Jackson County, NC. This is an example of a one-patch quilt which by definition is made from pieces of fabric that are one size and shape, in this case 1" hexagons. This striking quilt features cotton fabrics in prints, plaids, and solids in a variety of colors. The all-over fan quilting, using a heavy cotton thread without regard for the pieced shapes, is somewhat indicative of Scotch-Irish quilting traditions present in the Southern Appalachians.
