Description

This lap dulcimer, made from black walnut wood, is distinguished by a boat-shaped body and heart-shaped sound holes. The body style is characteristic of older, pre-Civil War dulcimers. A piece of paper is affixed to the inside states "Genuine Handcrafted Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer made by Fred M. Martin Swannanoa N.C. Feb. 1984 (Sweetheart Style)." Fred Martin was part of a family of renowned artisans including his father, Marcus Lafayette Martin, a regionally-known fiddler and instrument maker, and his mother, Callie Holloway Martin, a homemaker and good banjo player. The family included five boys, Wayne, Quentin, Edsel, Fred, and Wade Hampton Martin, and one girl, Zenobia. Wayne, Edsel, and Wade all became well-known woodcarvers. Fred, made instruments, built furniture, and operated a business known as Martin's Craft Shop.
