Description
This photograph features several carved animals and was taken by John Jacob Niles, in the 1930s. Niles (1892-1980) accompanied and assisted Doris Ulmann on her photography trips through Appalachia. The larger hand-carved bird figure was made by Nicodemus Demon Adams of Banner, Va.; the smaller carvings may have been made at the John C. Campbell Folk School, where he and Ulmann visited in 1933 and 1934. Niles also served as Music Director at the Folk School in 1935. Niles is most known as a composer, singer and collector of traditional ballads. He also played and handcrafted traditional musical instruments.
