Description

This signed photograph of a warped loom was taken by Doris Ulmann in the early 1930s. It shows the warp going up from the back beam to the heddles of the loom. Although this particular loom was located in Berea, Ky., it is typical of the types of looms used in western North Carolina during this time period. In fact, there was a strong connection between Berea's Fireside Industries and the various weaving production centers in western North Carolina in terms of training, shared weaving patterns, and similar marketing strategies.
